A word from our interns.
Each month, the interns of Opera NexGen reflect on their experiences and opportunities. Let’s take a look at what they have to say:
This month, we’ll be hearing from our Administration Intern, Ryu:
“This month at Opera NexGen was great for learning about artist management in opera. As an Administration Intern, learning about Justin Werner’s role in the opera industry was eye-opening in seeing the many different responsibilities for a manager to accomplish. In our Demystifying Artist Management webinar, Mr. Werner discussed more in-depth the role artist managers play.
Our Demystifying Artist Management webinar helped me see the importance of communication. Mr. Werner that one of the roles of a manager is seeking potential artists who would benefit from management; often his company attends schools and competitions. Where the communication comes into play is having a conversation with current and potential clients: it’s a hands-on process. This shows me how management should not just be a “one and done” experience, but that it is important to be involved with the artist so that they can improve and ensure that the goals of both the manager and artist are agreed upon and can help benefit the artist. Feedback from the manager can help the artist find what they need to work on and also identify if management is right for them.
Not only did the webinar help me see communication as an important part of management, but it also showed me navigating failures is also an idea to value. In a team-based setting, feedback is critical to ensure that the team can move forward productively and efficiently. As a manager, it is important that the goals of the artist are understood and that the manager provides honest feedback so that it truly benefits the artist. It helps the artist move forward, and the manager understands if they are helping the artist get to where they want to be.
The webinar was an important part of this month because of the great points Mr. Werner had to mention. While the topic was primarily on artist management, many of his talking points could be applied to general management. His experience and answers to questions from the audience did live up to the title of the webinar of “demystifying artist management” and clear the air for me on what artist management was.
